I was cruising around the Snarkfest forums (which are an alright substitute for Fametracker, but I do miss the meaner, smarter edge that Fametracker had) today, when I found an interesting topic about funeral songs.
It got me thinking about the music that people play at major events. One couple I know whose son died at 17 in a freak boating accident, had Linus and Lucy from Peanuts played at his funeral.
I've said that when I die, I want it to be an Irish wake. I want an open bar and some loud, crazy music as people get drunk, reminisce about the good memories and talk trash about how I always mooched free meals.
Musically, I've said that the songs for my funeral include:
Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" -- because I defy anyone not to laugh hysterically at that or start grooving to that fat bass beat;
Warren Zevon's "Keep me in your heart" -- which is a blatant attempt to get people to cry, but it's also a wonderful song; and
Modest Mouse's "Float On" -- because no matter what, no matter how shitty things get, it'll be alright eventually.
There's probably other songs too as I get older and crankier, but I'm curious to see what other people would have at their funeral and why.

I think I would like the QOTSA "Song for the Dead" so people can rock out at my funeral.
I'd want this song, which was written by Neil Gaimen for the group "Folk Underground" (it's also the name of the song). It's morbid and wrong and damn funny when you hear it.
There are folk underground
and they don’t do a lot
but they listen to us
in the sun
And the folk underground
think as likely as not
we’ll be joining them all
when we’re done
And they shift in their coffins
And toss in their beds
While the worms lick their shins
and crawl right through their heads
And they never go dancing
they don’t make a sound
so be careful of folk underground
I'd also want Van Morisson's 'Into the Mystic', as well as Timbuk 3s "Gotta Wear Shades" (just for the irony).
