Love is a battlefield

With all the movies this summer, the one I was looking forward to the most wasn't Star Wars or Batman -- it was Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which had the earmarkings of a possibly deranged, silly and black romantic comedy.

Yes, a romantic comedy can be black in humor. See my theory about Fight Club.

Anyways, I managed to catch it this weekend with Kat and Katie and while it was alright, I was kind of disappointed. Ever get the feeling that someone's pulling their punches because they don't want to hurt/piss off someone else? That's how I felt about this movie.

Make no mistake about it. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are fuckin' HAWT in this film (and I do think that Brad Pitt plays a better stoner or nutjob than a straightlaced period guy doing a shitty British accent), but the PG-13 rating didn't give them a chance to sizzle really. While a R rating would've reduced the audience, I like to think that it would've given a chance for the story to really shine.

The sex scenes -- much like many movies -- make no sense whatsoever. Who the hell looks at someone and decides, "fucking in the house we just DEMOLISHED is a good idea"? But that's one of many plot holes you could drive a mack truck through.

There's no ending really -- it's almost as if the screenwriter went, "Eh, fuck it. I'm done," and went out for a beer.

I do recommend it either as a matinee or as a Brew 'N View. Frankly, it's not worth that much money and while the comedy is good, the pulled punches are kinda disappointing. In a way, I hope they do either a director's cut or unrated version so we get the hot sex scenes between two insanely pretty people as well as the black comedy.
