Dear Benevolent Dictator --
Tomorrow you turn nine months old. At this point, you've been out of my womb for as long as you were growing in it. So why does my C-Section scar still look an ugly purple? Isn't it about time you got a job?
I overheard someone once say that this is their favorite age for babies -- they're more vocal, mobile and adorable. You have gotten more active -- it's like you've gong "DING! BABY LEVEL 34!"
This was the month you began army crawling around the house to investigate light cords, crumbs, toys, Mommy and even the vacuum cleaner (which was exciting because it nearly fell down on you after you gave a good tug). Recently, you also learned how to sit up by yourself, which surprised the hell out of me when I went in your room to get you after a nap.
You: *sitting up and untying your crib bumper ties* "Oh hello there! How are you today?
Me: Wait. How the fuck did you do that?
You: Search me. I just did it. By the way, I'm thinking about climbing out of the crib when I hit the 12 month mark.
You've also been trying to get on your hands an knees, often missing the knees and getting into a push-up position. I have a feeling you're going to be in better shape than I ever will be. You're already amazingly strong with your grip. Seeing you do this just reminds me that I will need to childproof the house to keep every geeky gadget we have from falling on your head.
With this, comes a certain fearlessness. You're not afraid to look over the edge of the changing table as you shove various objects to the floor (Whaddya know! Gravity works!) or attempt to go over the edge of the chair to get to a toy faster. You're a little stunt baby. I love that fearlessness and I hope that you carry it into the future.
Oh, and YOU'VE GOT TWO FREAKIN' TEETH! How awesome is that? You've started to chew on bananas, peaches and other odds and ends, as well as me. Unlike other babies, this teething wasn't terrible *knock wood*.
This was also the month that you did your first baby sign for "eat" (which shouldn't surprise me because you're my kid and I do like my food). It was exciting because you were fussing and both me and Daddy asked if you were hungry and you cautiously did the sign, as if you were drawing it from memory.
Needless to say, the praise was loud and long, and you received your food. You haven't repeated it yet, but I hope it'll happen again soon.
One thing that I've noticed is that you're not as easy-going as you were in the past. You have opinions. You have definite likes and dislikes. And you're not afraid to tell me exactly how you feel. Which most of the times is this:
WOMAN! I WANT YOU! COME HITHER AND SUCCOR ME!
But at the same time, you don't cry that much. You're crying more now than before, but it's not like you're freaking the fuck out all the time. You're like your parents -- it seems like you pick your battles (it's just at the end of the night that's when you go to war).
You're also more outgoing with people. You enjoyed seeing my friend Sarah who stayed overnight. You didn't freak out when I left you at Nai Nai and Po Po's house for a day (you did however refuse to leave my side when I came back). You like meeting new people, tasting new objects and seeing new things.
Anyways, when that person said that her favorite baby age was around now, I had to agree with her. This is fun. It's busy, chatty, playful and exciting. I can't wait to see what happens when you hit your next baby level.
Love,
Momma
