Finally! After two aborted attempts to see 300, Jeff and I finally managed to see the movie in IMAX. And while it is pretty --- oooh the pretty, pretty sets, it's also got a certain air of well, fromage to it, and here's the reasons why:
1. The Emperor from Star Wars shows up.
2. Gollum also makes a cameo.
3. There's a rhino charging on a narrow strait.
4. Olyphants!
5. Where the hell does Leonidas put an apple for eating when all he's wearing is a cape and a leather Speedo?
6. It's hard to take a deep, stirring speech about freedom and war and standing your ground seriously when the guy is wearing well....a speedo.
7. I never knew that Xerxes was such a drag queen.
8. I understand the deeper meaning behind "freedom isn't free," but it's become so cliche now that when I hear it, I can't help but snort and giggle.
9. LOTR's orcs also make a cameo.
10. I've never seen so many perky nipples before.
Historically, the strategy and warfare was way more interesting than some of the plot, which seemed to be a bunch of cheeseball cliches from a lot of movies. You've got your noble queen, a corrupt politician, the noble king, the brave soldiers bonding and busting each other's balls, and a decadent, corrupt enemy.
After the movie, Jeff just leaned over to me and whispered, "I know this movie's fiction and all, but I can see why Iran's pissed off about it."
It's not bad and I'm happy I saw it because it's SO! DAMN! PRETTY! And not just the guys -- the scenery, the mood, the lighting and the shadows are almost decadent in a way. Several shots are like a rich, Renaissance painting that just is beautiful to behold. I'd also say that it's worth checking out on the big screen just for scope and size of it.
