Are you dead yet? No? Good! Listen to this!

So Chris Martin from Coldplay has been talking about Coldplay's new album and how's it's pure genius or some shit like that. Apparently during the recording process, the band has to have:

“(O)ne song that we feel like everybody has to hear ... before we die, otherwise we'll be terribly depressed. ... So luckily, with this new record we're going to make, we have that one song.”

Admittedly, I've heard Coldplay songs. Normally against my will. Either that or they make me pass out and nearly hit the car in front of me in traffic. But the guy got me thinking -- what are the songs that I think everyone should hear before they die?

While it's easy for me to leap instantly into U2's catalog -- One and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For are the first songs that pop into my head -- there's other songs that come to mind.

I guess it depends -- are we talking about songs that are just rockin' good songs, or are we talking about songs that describe the human condition? Or are these songs that are just so technically perfect or iconic that you have to listen to them to know them?

I thought about it for maybe a few minutes that figured that if it had to be one song, that one song that I felt everyone had to hear before they died, it would have to be U2's One. Yeah, it's a ballad and not exactly rocking and it's a bit on the arena rock anthem side, but the theme I think resonates the best with me. We're all human beings stuck together in this world. While we may not always get along and while we may hate each other, fight and even destroy each other, in the end we're stuck with each other and we're all that we've got. We're not the same, we may never see eye to eye, but in a weird way, we're all family.

So let me pose the question to you: What do you feel is the one song everyone must hear before they die?

You know, I never thought much about U2's "One" until I heard it performed by Johnny Cash. Now I am totally, passionately in love with that version and it rends my heart every time I hear it. I recommend you seek it out if you haven't heard it yet.

I'd have to make them listen to Shatner's rendition of Common People or anything off of "Has Been" for that matter.

I think anything by Mahalia Jackson, because everyone should hear her voice.

Just one song? That's hard, but the one that I keep coming back to is "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder. That's probably the best song ever recorded. And ditto to what K. wrote.

I am totally in agreement with you about One, Viv; however I'd want people to listen to the Mary J. Blige duet with Bono--her voice strikes chords in me on that song like Bono did the first time I listened to Achtung Baby. Wowsers.
